The Role of Medication Literacy in NDIS Quality and Safeguards
Medication literacy refers to a person’s ability to understand their medicines, use them correctly, and know when to seek help.
Within the NDIS, strong medication literacy supports the goals of quality and safeguarding by reducing risk, improving safety, and promoting informed choice and control. When participants and their support teams understand what medications are for, how they should be taken, and what to watch for, the likelihood of errors, adverse events, and misunderstandings is reduced.
Medication literacy is not about clinical knowledge. It is about clear communication, practical understanding, and confidence in everyday use. Building this understanding supports safer care, stronger decision-making, and greater independence, aligning with the NDIS focus on participant wellbeing and risk minimisation.
