Medication Support and Duty of Care for Providers
Providers supporting people with disability have a duty of care to ensure medications are used safely and appropriately within their role and scope.
This includes supporting understanding, safe routines, accurate prompting, and recognising when something is not right. It also means knowing the limits of one’s role and ensuring that clinical concerns are referred to the appropriate health professionals.
Medication support contributes to duty of care by reinforcing clear information, promoting consistency, and helping support workers and care teams stay aligned. When roles and boundaries are clear, and participants are supported to understand and use their medicines safely, risks are reduced and quality of care is strengthened.
