The Role of Education in Reducing Medication-Related Risk

Medication-related risk is often linked not to the medicine itself, but to misunderstanding.

When people are unclear about what a medication is for, how it should be taken, what side effects to watch for, or when to seek advice, the likelihood of errors and adverse events increases. Complex regimens, changes in routine, and multiple support workers can further increase this risk.

Education plays a critical role in reducing harm. Clear, practical explanations help participants and their support teams understand how medications fit into daily life, recognise potential concerns early, and respond appropriately when something does not feel right.

Medication education is not about overwhelming people with technical detail. It is about providing the right information, in the right way, at the right time, so that medications can be used safely and with confidence.
