Who Can Provide Medication Support under the NDIS
Under the NDIS, medication support is a non-clinical role that focuses on helping participants use their medicines safely in everyday life. It does not involve prescribing, changing, or clinically managing medications.
Medication support can be provided by trained support workers and by specialist services working within a clearly defined, non-clinical scope. This includes support with understanding medicines, building routines, recognising concerns, safe storage, and knowing when to seek clinical advice.
Clinical decisions about medications remain the responsibility of doctors, nurses, and pharmacists working in their clinical roles. They are responsible for prescribing, reviewing, and adjusting treatment.
Medication support services work alongside these clinicians, reinforcing information, supporting safe daily use, and helping participants and their care teams stay informed and aligned. Clear role boundaries are essential to ensure safety, accountability, and high-quality support for NDIS participants.
